It comes, perhaps via French commerce, from Latin commercium ‘trade’, a compound noun formed from the collective prefix com- ‘together’ and merx ‘merchandise’. The adjective commercial is 17th-century, its nominal use for ‘broadcast advertisement’ 20thcentury.
